Dolgellau: Summer Camping at Bryn Y Gwin Farm

I love summer camping and recently found the perfect summer camping spot minutes outside the quaint little town of Dolgellau (the town right before Barmouth).   As we would be hiking up Cadair Idris that afternoon we thought it best to set up camp before we went.

We stopped of a Dolgellau’s tourist point to ask for a campsite and an easy place to park so that we could hike up Cadair!   The guy at the desk told us that many farmers along the road let people just pitch up and camp which is great new if you’re a lastminute.com kind of adventurer like me. If not, I’d suggest googling it and go on to those camping and caravan review sites.

After taking the main road out the back of Dolgellau, we came across Bryn Y Gwin farm – a lovely spot tucked away into woodland. The main part of the site has the owner’s stone cottage where you’ll be greeted by them. We were charged a small fee of £4.50 per person per night and told we could have a camp fire as long as we signed a disclaimer (bonus!)

We were directed to our field which was empty (another bonus) which had a fast flowing stream at the side (amazing to listening to last thing at night and first thing of the morning.)   The amenities consisted of a posh little shed located next to the stream with a toilet and wash basin. The showers however were in the main part of the campsite but I didn’t try them out so I can’t comment on them but our amenities were spotless!  We were told that we could drink the stream’s water as long as it was boiled otherwise you can collect water from a tap which is just on the side of a small mill again located in the main part of the site. There are three fire pits in total dotted about the field, one having a built in grill so you can have a BBQ!

This gem is truly my favourite summer camping spot – it’s quiet, not many people know about it, the owners are wonderful, it’s clean and there’s even an option of having free range eggs off their chickens (£1.20 for 6).

Cheese & apple salad., Veggie burger, and free range poached egg.

Hello breakfast! And tea, come to think of it!

I’ll be back there with more friends in a few weeks to hike and camp – why not?

Where’s your favourite place to camp?

P.S. Camping here means that you’ll hike the North side of Cadair Idris. The starting point has a car park (£4 all day) and toilets too.
